ASQ Grants "Fellow" Status to 18 Members

Milwaukee, Wis., February 1, 2008 — The American Society for Quality (ASQ) has awarded “Fellow” status to 18 members. These individuals were elected Fellows by ASQ’s board of directors in November 2007. In being elected Fellows, they are recognized as having achieved professional distinction and pre-eminence in the technology, theory, education, application, or management of quality control.

According to ASQ bylaws, Fellow membership status may be awarded to those individuals who have been ASQ members in good standing and meet the following criteria:

  • Have at least 15 years of quality-related experience
  • Meet minimum score requirements across six professional categories
  • Are sponsored by peers and endorsed by their ASQ section and/or division
  • Have been a Senior member for five years or longer

“As newly elected Fellows of ASQ, these 18 individuals exemplify the Society’s quest to ‘Make Good Great®’ in each of their industries,” said ASQ President Mike Nichols. “This distinction marks their commitment to making quality a personal ethic, an organizational imperative, and a global priority.”

The new ASQ Fellows, in alphabetical order, are:

Peter L. Andres, The Boeing Company, Huntington Beach, Calif. – For leadership, innovation, and passion in promoting the advancement of the quality profession and for the creative application of quality management principles. He has promoted education and development opportunities as a mentor and role model. Andres has provided dedicated service as an ASQ section officer, division leader, and chair of ASQ’s annual conference for more than 10 years.

Donald Brecken, Commercial Tool and Die, Inc., Caledonia, Mich. – For outstanding leadership and innovation in the practical application of quality tools and techniques, fostering significant change, leading improvement, and implementing quality management systems. Brecken has offered exceptional contributions as an adjunct instructor for development and delivery of quality curriculum, and ASQ section leadership dedicated to improving member value.

Mahlon G. Cashman, WCA and Associates, Westfield, Mass. – For a long and distinguished career as a quality practitioner promoting the advancement of quality management principles spanning more than 36 years; and for outstanding leadership while volunteering and teaching for ASQ, particularly with the Western Massachusetts Section and North East Quality Council for more than 16 years.

Kwai-Sang Chin, City University of Hong Kong, Kowloon, Hong Kong – For exceptional international service to the Chinese quality community as a representative of the American Society for Quality; dedicated academic research into manufacturing applications of the theory and practice of quality in Hong Kong; and for inspiring leadership of national quality management initiatives in the entire Asia-Pacific region.

Daksha J. Chokshi, United Technologies Pratt & Whitney, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. – For outstanding contributions and leadership in the statistical methods and quality technologies discipline; excellence in research, mentoring, and education in sound qualitative as well as quantitative data-driven methodologies; and for developing innovative techniques for nontraditional applications for aligning customer needs to business requirements and technical capabilities.

Diane N. Dixon, Future Electronics, Webster, Mass. – For distinguished service, dedication, and significant contribution in the advancement of quality through her leadership; promotion of quality concepts, quality tools, and methodologies; and for her never ending commitment to continuous improvement and business excellence.

Ronald J. Does, The Institute for Business and Industrial Statistics of the University of Amsterdam, Santpoort-Zuid, Netherlands – For being a true champion of quality and quality management in Europe, and for mentoring the next generation of European quality leaders.

Chandru M. Idnani, Enterprise Consulting, Saratoga, Calif. – For outstanding contributions in the field of quality assurance, and implementation of ISO 9000 and HSPM; service on the board of examiners of the California Governor’s Golden State Quality Award; outstanding leadership in the ASQ Silicon Valley Section 613; meritorious achievements in design/product engineering; and for supply-chain management.

Gary G. Jing, Entegris, Shakopee, Minn. – For contributions in science and technology, especially reliability and Six Sigma through more than 20 publications and patents; for recognition as an outstanding researcher by the U.S. government and in China; for promoting quality and excellence through teaching and execution worldwide; and for exemplary leadership in and contribution to ASQ Minnesota Section 1203.

William M. Kelly, Wells Fargo Home and Consumer Finance Group, Urbandale, Iowa – In recognition of outstanding leadership and innovation in the field of statistics and Six Sigma as mentor, educator, practitioner, and integrator of the theories and methodologies in a multitude of businesses and industries. The application of the methodologies has led to world-class quality, substantial cost savings, and increased productivity.

Donald P. Lynch, The SKF Group, Howell, Mich. – For outstanding contributions to both industry and academia in the area of continuous improvement in the attainment of results that help to propel successful organizations, as well as the education of those change agents who drive them.

John P. Pianelli, Bristol Myers-Squibb Company, Ann Arbor, Mich. – For 27 years of outstanding leadership in the development and application of quality management systems used in the regulated pharmaceutical industry’s new investigational medicines arena, manufactured, tested, and packaged under the Food & Drug Administration’s Good Manufacturing Practices, and used in human clinical studies at major teaching hospitals worldwide.

Govindarajan Ramu, JDS Uniphase Corporation, Milpitas, Calif. – For advancing the quality profession through innovations and problem-solving approaches in engineering metrology and Six Sigma; for leadership roles in ASQ member units; for being a catalyst in growing awareness for an international member unit in India; and for contributions to ASQ certifications as a moderator, facilitator, mentor, and trainer.

Phillip J. Ross, Quality Services International, Lewisburg, Tenn. – In recognition of more than 25 years of contributions to the use of and education and training in various quality and statistical methods. Especially significant is his dedication to disseminating the understanding and use of designed experiments throughout many industries.

Mustafa S. Shraim, SQPS, Ltd., Columbus, Ohio – In recognition of his work in establishing effective quality management systems in many organizations; his innovative methods in teaching statistical quality techniques to professionals; and for his promotion of ASQ for many years.

Olin G. Shuler, Consultant, Quincy, Ill. – For a lifetime of principle-based contributions to the quality sciences field, and for his enthusiastic mentoring of those who have been fortunate enough to have been profoundly influenced by his knowledge, experience, and wit.

Ronald K. Tuznik, Dana Corporation, West Chester, Ohio – For outstanding leadership in quality systems and process improvement activities in manufacturing; for devoted section leadership and management; and for professional competence in quality management in the aerospace, automotive, pulp and paper, and valve industries.

Charles E. Volk, Winston Salem, N.C. – For significant contributions in the application of quality tools in the electronics and semi-conductor industries; establishing and improving process capability for manufacturing equipment; improving process yield and developing quality protocols to maintain performance; developing and teaching quality-related courses; and for dedicated service to and leadership of ASQ Central North Carolina Section 1109.
