ASQ Designates 2006 Fellows

Milwaukee, Wis., January 2, 2007 – The American Society for Quality (ASQ) has awarded “Fellow” status to 17 members.  These individuals were elected Fellows by ASQ’s board of directors in November 2006. By having Fellow status conferred upon them, they are being recognized as having achieved professional distinction and pre-eminence in the technology, theory, education, application, or management of quality control.

According to ASQ bylaws, Fellow membership status may be awarded to those individuals who have been ASQ members in good standing and meet the following criteria:

  • Have 15 years of quality-related experience
  • Meet minimum score requirement across six professional categories
  • Are sponsored by peers and endorsed by their ASQ Section and/or ASQ Division
  • Have been a Senior member for five years or longer

“By conferring fellow status to these men and women, ASQ recognizes the tremendous contribution they have made toward making quality a personal ethic, an organizational imperative, and a global priority,” says ASQ President Ron Atkinson.  “They are the true stewards of the quality movement and the embodiment of the quality profession. What’s more, many of them may become the future leaders of ASQ.”

The new ASQ Fellows, in alphabetical order, are:

Thomas Andrew Britt, Marysville, Ohio – For significant contributions in the application of quality tools in the rubber manufacturing industry; for establishing and improving process capability of older equipment; for implementing control systems and streamlining data collection of new technologies; and for active ASQ participation in five states.

Lev M. Klyatis, Jersey City, N.J. For outstanding contribution and innovation in the fields of physical simulation, accelerated reliability testing, and accurate prediction, that leads to improving quality, reliability, maintainability, and durability during design, manufacturing, and usage; for implementation practices via consulting, seminars, books, and over 200 publications; for over 30 patents in different countries".

Ramesh Konda, Fremont, Calif. – For outstanding contributions in the field of quality assurance and implementation of ISO 9000; for serving as examiner for the Michigan State Quality Award and Nebraska State Edgerton Quality Award; for outstanding leadership in ASQ Nebraska Section 1302 and Silicon Valley Section 613; and for meritorious achievements in the auto industry and electronic and general manufacturing.

Edwin G. Landauer, Oregon City, Ore. – For service to ASQ Portland Section 607 and the Society as a leader, innovator, creator, and provider of exemplary thinking and education supportive of universal adoption of the principles and practices of quality to provide economic viability.

William A. Levinson, Wilkes Barre, Pa. – For his exemplary service to ASQ Northeastern Pennsylvania Section 209.  He developed and maintains the section Web site, is an instructor for section-sponsored certification study courses, and has presented numerous workshops for section membership.  He is an accomplished author with six books published to date.

Sandford Liebesman, Morristown, N.J. –   For a distinguished career and continuing leadership in the Electronic and Communications Division and the Sarbanes-Oxley Community, as a frequent chair and respected leader of numerous conferences and workshops, as a standards developer, prolific writer, and substantive presenter on a breadth of quality, reliability, standards and related topics.

David A. Manalan, Acton, Mass. – For significant contributions to ASQ and the Biomedical Division, especially for work to improve communications to members; for dedicated service and leadership in section, division, discussion group, and community; and for outstanding contributions in the integration of quality system processes through work with industries regulated by the FDA, EPA, and similar agencies.

William Quackenbush Meeker, Jr Ames, Iowa – For significant contributions to the field of reliability analysis; for making statistical analyses accessible to practitioners; and for major editorial service to the Society.

Joseph J. Pignatiello Jr., Tallahassee, Fla. – For outstanding leadership in the field of quality engineering as an educator; for innovative and significant research contributions in statistical process control and experiment design; and for distinguished editorial service to the quality profession.

Sheila Richardson Poling, Oak Ridge, Tenn. – For dedicated service to the quality profession since 1983 via senior leadership or managing partner positions in four national / internationally recognized consulting firms; and for co-authoring five books covering SPC, customer-focused quality, Six Sigma, and continual improvement skills case studies.

Gordon A. Skattum, Rockford, Ill. – For exemplary service to the quality profession for more than 30 years.  These efforts include advancing one of the first community college QA programs to a state-of-the-art curriculum by including metrology, Six Sigma, and the philosophy of continuous improvement; and for serving as one of only two experts outside the automotive industry to participate in writing the third edition of the Measurement System Analysis.

Jimmy L. Smith, Metamora, Ill. – For his outstanding service in the quality profession; for teaching individuals and groups in quality topics at both the section level and within his company, contributing to the company's world-class excellence; and for his outstanding leadership role in creating quality awareness and services to the ASQ Heart of Illinois Section 1211.

Larry R. Smith, Dearborn, Mich. – For contributions in the field of TRIZ knowledge and applications; and for promoting the field of quality around the world through various projects, special events, educational endeavors, and organizations; for the development of a true mastery in the field of quality; and for his willingness to share his knowledge with others.

Manly P. Thornton, Elkhart, Ind. – In recognition of three decades of distinguished service to the Society as an instructor, speaker, mentor, volunteer, and practitioner.  For ongoing development and implementation of practical quality applications in the medical device field and other areas. 
Aaron Wai Kwok Tong, Hong Kong –  For promotion of quality activities in Hong Kong and China; for longtime service to the Hong Kong Society for Quality; and for setting an example of what a quality professional is.

Willy W. Vandenbrande, Brugge, Belgium – For his contributions to the Flemish quality magazine De kwaliteitskrant, a publication of the Flemish Centre for Quality Management, in cooperation with Industrie Magazine; for teaching TQM to exchange students in the European Union Erasmus program; for outstanding contributions to the ASQ International Chapter as Belgian country councilor; and for his inspiring columns, articles, and lectures.

Jeffrey C. Worthington, Edgewater, Md. – For continued commitment to the quality profession and leadership in innovative application of quality management principles to the quality of data and information content, representation, and distribution.
