Question of the Week

Q: I'm looking for literature that deals with design review.  What does ASQ have?

A: Design review is the formal, documented, comprehensive, and systematic examination of a design to evaluate the capability of the design to meet the requirements for functionality, manufacturability, and quality.

Such a review typically is conducted to identify possible problems before production starts, but it may be held at any stage of the design process.

Design for Lean Six Sigma: A Holistic Approach to Design and Innovation
by Rajesh Jugulum and Philip Samuel
Here's a unique approach to Design for Lean Six Sigma (DFLSS). First it offers readers a structured road map with descriptions of the essential concepts, tools, and techniques for design in an engineering and a service context. Second, it combines the important concepts of Design for Six Sigma, an approach that reduces operational variation and defects, with concepts of Lean, an approach that helps eliminate waste and shortens cycle time.

IEC 61160 Ed. 2.0 (2006): Design Review (e-Standard)
This International Standard makes recommendations for the implementation of design review as a means of verifying that the design input requirements have been met and are stimulating the improvement of the product’s design.

Better Safe Than Sorry
by Randall L. Goodden
Quality Progress, May 2008
Many recent events have highlighted the problems associated with doing business with unproven suppliers overseas. If products are defective or cause injury, the company bringing the product into the country will bear the liability and costs.
