Why do I have to log in to rate or comment?
We ask that you log in so that we can block spam and random postings to the site. Occasionally, ASQ may contact you at your e-mail address to follow up on a comment. For more information, please see our Privacy Policy.
When and where will my comment be displayed?
Ratings will appear instantly. We will make all attempts to publish your comments within 48 hours. We reserve the right to display comments in a variety of ways. All comments are published on a comments page that is linked from the main content page. More recent comments are displayed on the content page itself.
Is there a guide for assigning ratings?
You can use this as a guide for assigning your rating. Keep in mind that everyone's definition of these terms is subjective.
* * * * * = Outstanding
* * * * = Recommended
* * * = Fair
* * = Disappointing
* = Poor
How are ratings calculated?
Ratings are a basic average rounded to the nearest half. Since you do not need to include a comment with your rating (or vice versa), the total number of comments is not indicative of the total number of ratings.
Why do you moderate comments?
By screening submissions, we create a space where you can exchange intelligent and informed commentary. Our goal is to promote an environment where you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and opinions – good and bad.
While most comments will be posted if they are on-topic and not abusive, moderating decisions are subjective. We make them as carefully and consistently as we can. Because of the volume of comments, we cannot review individual moderation decisions and generally cannot alter a comment once it is posted.
What kind of comments are you looking for?
We value thoughtful comments representing a range of views that make their point quickly and politely. Comments should directly relate to the content. General or unrelated discussions should take place on the discussion board.
We make an effort to protect discussions from repeated comments – either by the same person or different people. A few things we won't tolerate: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, profanity (including expletives and letters followed by dashes), commercial promotion, impersonations, and incoherence.
Do you edit comments?
No. Comments are either approved or they're not – regardless of typographical or grammatical errors.
What about criticism?
We welcome strong opinions and criticism, but we don't want comments to become bogged down with discussions of our policies. The comments area should not be used as a discussion board or as an area for personal attacks.

We appreciate it when visitors point out errors and will investigate all assertions. We prefer to receive these suggestions by e-mail. To avoid distracting others, we won't necessarily publish comments that suggest a correction. Instead, corrections may be sent to help@asq.org.
