Welcome! Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the ASQ Healthcare Division. The division will reciprocate your decision to join us by engaging you in our activities. We fully intend to prove worthy of your membership and of your commitment of your precious time. Joining the Healthcare Division can be a very important step in your professional career. It brings you together with many people with similar interests who can be helpful to you. By the same token, you can be of value to the division by sharing your knowledge and experience with other members, as well as by participating in division projects. Networking may be one of the most value-added features for you. I personally invite you to contact me at jmlevett@hotmail.com to discuss what you expect to achieve from your membership and how you might contribute to the Healthcare Division. Here are just some of the initiatives in which the division is involved. ASQ, under contract to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, assists in the administration of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Program. This program was created to build active partnerships in the private sector in order to improve national competitiveness. Over the last three years, more than half of the applicants for the award have been from healthcare. The goal of the Healthcare Division is to provide award applicants and others access to the body of knowledge necessary to be successful in their quest for excellence and in transforming their organizations into Baldrige Award recipients. Every other month, the Healthcare Division publishes a newsletter in the Patient Safety and Quality Healthcare magazine. The newsletter serves as one form of contact between you and other members. The newsletter editors are always seeking fresh ideas from the membership, and the newsletter provides a platform for you to share your experiences with thousands of others. If you have an article you would like considered for publication, please send it to the newsletter editor. The ASQ World Conference on Quality and Improvement will be held in Minneapolis, May 18–20, 2009, and the Healthcare Division is planning its Quality Institute for Healthcare Conference, which runs concurrent with the World Conference. The QIHC includes many topics of interest to healthcare providers and administrators, ranging from Lean/Sigma/ISO 9000 to quality metrics, to the Baldrige Award, and systems engineering.
