An Introduction to Lean Thinking

Learn More

The performance improvement methodologies of lean and six sigma are having a dramatic effect in the private sector: radically speeding up operations and allowing organizations to efficiently deliver high quality to demanding customers.

Can these concepts work in government?

Absolutely.

But first we have to get over the mindset in government that "we are different". This Webinar addresses this mindset head-on showing how to overcome the three myths that prevent government agencies from making the types of operational improvements achieved in the private sector:

  • We Don’t Make Widgets – All that quality and customer satisfaction stuff is easy in manufacturing but what we do is squishy and intangible, therefore it’s hard to measure and even harder to improve.
  • We don’t have customers – We have hostages — they didn’t choose us, they don’t want to come back, and it doesn’t really matter if they are happy or not. Also, we have multiple customers with competing interests who can never agree on what they need much less what they want.
  • We’re not here to make a profit – With no bottom line there is not the incentive to improve and in fact we are often punished for being more efficient.

Ken Miller, author of We Don’t Make Widgets: Overcoming the Myths That Keep Government From Radically Improving shows how to bust these myths and allow government managers to transform their operations.
