Executive Panel: EMS Today: ISO 14001:2004 Changes and Emerging Certification Issues
The panel will present an assessment of Environmental Management Systems issues currently. First, the changes to the 2004 version of ISO 14001 will be described and their implications discussed. Lessons learned from early audits to ISO 19011:2004 will also be discussed and current trends outlined. Second, several emerging and current issues relating to ISO 14001 certification will be described, including auditing regulatory compliance, auditor competence, and the general credibility and effectiveness of the certification process.

Executive Panel:
Nuclear Power Perspectives: Measuring Performance and New Plant Development
In the early 90s the NRC's method of assessing plant performance needed improvement to become more understandable, objective, and responsive to licensee performance. This panel will review the self-examination and actions of the NRC, and describe the process of working with NEI and a selected set of pilot plants to establish a more objective and effective means to assess performance. The process by which performance measures have further evolved will also be described, as well as the changes to those indicators. The status of new plant development will also be discussed. Time will be provided for questions on these and other nuclear industry topics.

From Columbia to Discovery: Understanding the Impact Threat to the Space Shuttle
The loss of the space shuttle Columbia in 2003 was caused by the impact of foam insulation on the leading edge of the wing. The foam strike created a hole in reinforced carbon-carbon panel 8 that led to excessive heating during re-entry, loss of the integrity of the left wing, and subsequent loss of the vehicle and crew. In the two and a half years following the accident there was a concerted effort to understand the impact threat to the space shuttle system, before the launch of space shuttle Discovery on July 26, 2005. The effort was a large one, and was essentially comprised of five integrated parts. The presentation reviews the extensive experimental and modeling efforts related to impact in the return to flight program and includes test and simulation videos. Finally, impact related results from STS -114 are presented: ice formation on the pad during the first launch attempt, the on-orbit inspection, the tile gap fillers, the torn fabric blanket, and the post-flight inspection of the Orbiter upon its safe return August 9, 2005.
