CQE exam
Posted: Jul 5, 2004 6:11 PM

What is the best way to study for the CQE exam. Are there any classes in the Memphis area where I can take a prep class? I've taken the exam 2 times and have come close to passing but always miss by 2 points. My weak area is advanced statistical methods. Can you suggest a good reference book that explains these concepts in real plain english? Is there a "Advanced Statistical Methods for Dummies?"

I think, there is no best or worst way. Preparation strategy depends on your existing knowledge and experience with respect to body of knowledge.
Taking a refresher course is a good idea. However, individual preparation is key to the exam success. Now that you know the weak area, you can concentrate more. Concentrate on other areas too.

If you cannot find a refresher course from your section, try ASQ's Certified Quality Engineer self-directed program:

You may want to take a course from:
http://www.asq.org/certification/quality-engineer/
then take simulated exams and strengthen the weak areas by reviewing the references mentioned below.

For advanced statistics, I used:

Montgomery, Douglas C., Introduction to Statistical Quality Control, 4th ed., New York: John Wiley and Sons, 2001. ISBN 0471316482
You may also want to consider:
Grant, Eugene L., and Richard S. Leavenworth, Statistical Quality Control, 7th ed.,
New York: McGraw-Hill Publishing Co., 1996. P597

Preparation is the key. Take as much practice as you can before the exam.

Best wishes for your exam,
Govind.

I also like Mark Crossley's book on statistics that is available through ASQ. It helped me pass my CQE.

Do you have a community college in your area. Perhaps a course or 2 in statistics would be of value. Community colleges are usually open enrollment and cost/value in your favor. Also, if you don't have the brochure for the exam get one from ASQ. It has a list of references that you may want to study. Good luck.

Can folks comment on what reference book(s) or reference material(s) have been of most benefit in terms of preparing for CQE Exam?

Larry,

Back in 1991 when I took the exam, I found Juran's Quality Handbook to be valuable. I went through the entire handbook and highlighted and tabbed everything that I thought would be applicable. My focus was on being able to find the information quickly during the exam.

I believe the key really is preparation using select references rather than just taking a suitcase full of books and hoping to find answers during the test.

I agree not to take an armload of books. It is better to have no more than three. I ended up using two for much of the exam.

It's more about being able to find the right answer than knowing it in your head. Being familiar with your good quality reference books (I like mine because they are also useful after the exam) and your calculator is very important.

I was challenged (I'm not good at math) by the statistics portion. To prepare, I studied for 3 months all day long (I was out of work) and worked really hard at teaching myself statistics. Not everyone needs to work this hard, but I was determined to make my unemployment pay off. It worked.

I found that there was a goodly amount of application: what kind of formula works in what situation. I used the CQE Quick Reference Notes by Dodson, Nutt and Johnson (Quality Publishing, Tucson) where there is lots of room to jot down notes in the pages.

I don't like Quality Council of Indiana's Primer and CD exam materials. I used Pyzdek's (Quality Publishing, Tucson) preparation materials and liked them much better.

If you don't have the Quality Audit Handbook from ASQ, it's worth the price.

The Certified Quality Engineer's Handbook is good too (ASQ Quality Press). Here's a sample of it: http://qualitypress.asq.org/chapters/H1093.pdf

Good luck!

I've used the Quality Council of Indiana Primer and test CD with great success, on both CQE and CSSBB exams. The primers could "flow" a bit better. The CDs with their huge question base worked just great. The CDs have a reporting feature showing weak areas and allowing to focus on those. Good luck.

I have also used QCI materials for all my certifications. They are useful interms of covering the BOK "widthwise", They are arranged in the same order of the BOK sequence.Hence easy to review. Iam not sure if the QCI CD Question go through rigourous Peer review like ASQ does. I think close to 10~15% of the Questions in QCI CD (of 1000 questions) are either too ambiguios or multiple keys. Some incorrect too.But QCI CDs are in general useful to obtain sufficient speed and self assessment prior to actual exam.

My own personal favorite stats book overall, and it was the reference I used for at least 50% of the questions I had to look up during the CQE is Acheson Duncan's Quality Control and Industrial Statistics. I did have the advantage of having a graduate course taught out of it, but it really is pretty readable, though probably getting dated at this point.

I concur with others that the real strength of the Indiana Quality Council CQE Primer (and all of their Primers, for that matter) is in the electronic exam. I used the electronic exam to study for and pass the CQE, CQM, CSSBB, and CQA. The Primers are good for reference, but not great for studying straight through cover to cover.

I recommend folks sit down with the electronic exam and just start answering questions. Regardless of whether you get it right or wrong, click on the "explanation" button and it will tell you WHY the "most correct answer" is what it is. The electronic exam then references the page(s) in the Primer to find more information if you need it.

This method quickly gets you inside the minds of the test-writers-- a gift worth its weight in gold when you come up against those fuzzy, it-could-be-any-of-these-answers kinds of questions. For those who want it, I have a definitions sheet that I've put together based on the IQC Electronic Exams. It has been a HUGE help to me, and to others who have taken the CQE, CQT, CQM, CQA, and CSSBB exams. Shoot me an e-mail and I'll be glad to forward you a copy (it's in MS Excel format).

Let me first thank Mr. Bonney for developing & compiling this valuable collection of 611 commonly used terminologies in the ASQ Certification Exams. To ease the pain, he has also cross-referenced the terminology to QCI primer Section #-page#.

I would like to also extend my thanks to him for graciously allowing me to upload his work in Elsmar Cove.

Last week, I contacted Mr.Bonney to find out if he was able to mail the attachment for several requesters in this Discussion forum thread.

I understand Mr.Bonney was promptly sending the attachment to all those who requested from ASQ discussion forum. To make his life easy and benefit many users in ASQ discussion forum, I requested him to allow uploading the attachment in Elsmar Cove* “Professional Certification and Degrees” topic.

ASQ Certification Exams Definitions Sheet
http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=10574

Please note that QCI cross-references in that attachment are subject to change as the BOK changes or the QCI rearrange their material. However the “definition” column are not likely to change.

As requested by Mr.Bonney, please provide any feedback, suggestions.

Regards,
Govind.

*(Please note, since ASQ Discussion forum currently does not have feature to upload a document, I chose Elsmar Cove relevant topic to redirect the download. I am also a moderator for “professional Certifications and degrees” topic of Elmar. I want the users know that I have NO business relationship with Elsmar Cove. Bill,
I thought deleting might offend users as they did not technically violate any ASQ Policy. If I could lock the thread (like the feature in Elsmar), I would certainly do that and reopen a new thread for more value added discussions.

Just Figured out. The locking feature is available in Jive !
I think from the moderator perspective, this thread has covered details on CQE preparation and assistance to obtain definition sheet.
To avoid repetitive request for definition sheet email posts, Iam locking this thread. I welcome users to open any new thread to discuss value added topics in CQE preparation.

I have the CQE Primer and CD already. I found them somewhat ok to study with. I was nailing every practice test though with approx 90% and then barely failed the exam. I will be giving it another shot in December and need more solid references to the actual exam.

Thanks in advance.

If you're looking for a good stats book, I can suggest "Elementary Statistics" by Gary Bluman. As a student, I used it in 2 different level stats courses, and still use it as a resource. I teach a CQE refresher in my local section and have recommended it to my students as a supplement to the QCI primers.

I have a questiona as to which Juran "Quality Hanbook" to get for the CQE exam study and references. I have seen these books:
1. Juran's Quality Hanbook 5th Ed. with the burgundy cover (1999)

2. Juran's Quality Control Handbook (1988)Yellow cover

Are they one in the same just revised? Please, can someone clarify the difference between these two books and recommend the appropriate one in which to use for study and reference for the CQE.

Robert,

Both handbooks are basically the same. Like many reference books, Juran's handbook gets re-issued as a new edition every 10 years or so. Part of it has to do with selling out the last printing. Rather than just print more books, the publisher usually allows the original author to correct mistakes, add some more current information and even re-organize the contents.

The handbook is more for reference and is not the best way to study for the CQE. It will be difficult for you to reference a 800+ page book during the exam so it even has limitations for using it during the test.

Robert,
I just read the preface to Juran Quality handbook-fifth edition. Bill is correct. The name is changed from Quality Control handbook to Quality handbook. New emphasis on managing Quality structured and rearranged. Also the preface says that this edition has gone through extensive editing and updating. New sections, case studies and examples added.(did not specify which one)

Like bill mentioned, I was using Juran handbook as a reference rather than a direct reading reference. Again, mapping the CQE BOK in such voluminous handbook can be also ergonomically challenging.

CQE handbook from Quality Press authors will be more useful from the exam preparation point of view.
Juran handbook is an important reference; I keep beyond my exam requirement, at work, to train employees etc.
Regards,
Govind.
