This teaching philosophy can be applied to your life to help you achieve your goals.
Dr. Charles E. Williamson’s teaching philosophy:
Ø “Helping students learn and apply critical thinking”. Ø My teaching philosophy incorporates four elements that when combined allow students an opportunity to enjoy their learning experience. These four elements consist of the following:
Ø Developing the student’s learning potential
Ø Students may enter into college at one level of learning capability, but have the potential to finish their educational journey at a higher level of understanding. Professors can influence the acceleration of student development; therefore, it is part of my own key teaching performance measurement to encourage students to stretch themselves beyond their current capabilities. If students are not growing or feeling they have grown, then it is a reflection of the professor’s ability to teach effectively.
Ø Providing a conducive learning environment
Ø Creating a learning environment that encourages students to feel comfortable with expressing themselves during classroom discussions, presentations, and peer team learning exercises. My goal is to create an environment that invites meaningful dialog during classroom learning and encourages students to invite each other to continue dialogs outside of the classroom setting.
Ø Teaching effectiveness
Ø Presenting subject matter in a clear and concise style that makes the course content easily understandable for students that are timid about college level studies. Some students will avoid courses that have a reputation of being difficult to learn, but will consider the challenge if they believe the professor will be effective in helping them learn the content in manageable sizes of information.
Ø Making the learning applicable to industry practices
Ø As often as possible, my goal is to present course materials using practical examples that can be applied to real world scenarios. Theory alone does not allow the student to understand how science can be applied to the workforce; therefore, my goal is to make the connection between theory and practice. The praxis model is applied in all my teaching approaches, and it has proven to work effectively in helping students understand how to apply critical thinking.
