Why start an innovation network?
For over a decade, some of the world's thought leaders in quality have been saying that the next development in quality will involve the integration of tools for innovation and creativity. For example, in any problem solving or process improvement methodology, we ask teams to "improve." We depend on them to come up with breakthrough ideas, but don't teach them how to come up with these ideas. There are tools that can help.
Recent competitive pressure, a result of globalization, is forcing the need for companies to become more innovative to survive. The need for innovation has been recognized as a top priority in a recent ASQ futures study, the U.S. Council on Competitiveness, and Congressional leaders associated with the Small Business community. The creation of this network is just one way that ASQ is responding to this need.
What is TRIZ?
TRIZ is a Russian acronym for "Theory of Inventive Problem Solving." Created by Genrich Altshuller, it is a methodology for team oriented systemic innovation. This innovation occurs through the recognition that current system conflicts or contradictions are a key to unlocking new ideas. TRIZ practitioners strive to identify system conflicts or contradictions and then utilize operators that have been known to be effective in similar past conflicts to come up with win/win innovations for conflict resolution. TRIZ also studies system evolution, and utilizes laws and lines of how this system may evolve into the future to triangulate on a new innovation.
What are the Seven Creativity Tools?
The Seven Creativity Tools are a result of the work of Dr. Helmut Schlisksupp of the University of Heidelberg in Germany. He first researched creativity methods and techniques while working with a subsidiary of the Battelle Institute in Germany over 25 years ago. Subsequent work in applying creativity techniques in business applications resulted in the definition of 42 distinct creativity methods that he grouped into seven sets of tools. These tools include: Heuristic Redefinition, Class Brainstorming, Brainwriting 6-3-5, Imaginary Brainstorming, Word-Picture Association and Analogies, TILMAG, and the Morphological Box.
