Calibration Technician Certification

Step 1. Is this the right certification for you?

Here are the requirements, experience and exam specifics for a Calibration Technician. If you already know this is the certification you want to pursue, move on to exam preparation.

Education and/or Experience

You must have five years of on-the-job experience in one or more of the areas of the Certified Calibration Technician Body of Knowledge.

If you have completed a degree from a college, university, or technical school with accreditation accepted by ASQ, part of the five-year experience requirement will be waived, as follows (only one of these waivers may be claimed):

  • Diploma from a technical, military, or trade school—two years waived
  • Associate degree—two year waived
  • Bachelor's degree—two years waived
  • Master's or doctorate—two years waived

Degrees/diplomas from educational institutions outside the United States must be equivalent to degrees from U.S. educational institutions.

Minimum Expectations of a Certified Calibration Technician

  • Must know general metrology units and how they are applied, converted, and used. Must understand the principles and practices of traceability. Must be able to determine and use substitute standards, based on measurement requirements, equipment availability, and specifications.
  • Must be able to distinguish between measurement characteristics, apply basic measurement data considerations, and use various measurement methods. Must know measurement systems and their capabilities. Must understand the basic concepts of measurement assurance programs (MAPs). Must be able to use IM&TE specifications when taking measurements and identify and minimize sources of error.
  • Must know the components of calibration procedures and be able to use common calibration methods, both manual and automated, while following industry practices and regulations. Must understand the requirements and impact of the environment on the calibration processes for IM&TE. Must know IM&TE information and scheduling, and roles and responsibilities of staff. Must know how to maintain document control and be able to identify various types of calibration results reports.
  • Must be able to use technical and applied mathematics and basic statistical techniques. Must understand various terms associated with sampling issues.
  • Must be able to explain the benefits of quality standards and guides related to calibration. Must be able to define various components of a quality system and know the methods and tools used in the development, improvement, and review of a quality system. Must be able to identify and assess the impact of nonconformances. Must understand the overall quality audit process and what documentation is needed for an audit.
  • Must know the ASQ Code of Ethics and be able to identify appropriate ethical behavior.
  • Must know how to use personal protective equipment and be able to identify potential hazards in the work environment, be able to interpret various HAZ-COM directives, and understand the importance of good housekeeping.
  • Must know basic uncertainty measurement terms. Must understand the key elements of developing an uncertainty budget. Must know how measurement uncertainty is determined and reported.

Examination

Each certification candidate is required to pass a written examination that consists of multiple-choice questions that measure comprehension of the Body of Knowledge. The Calibration Technician examination is a one-part, 125-question, four-hour exam and is offered in English.

Examinations are conducted twice a year, in June and December, by local ASQ sections and international organizations. All examinations are open-book. Each participant must bring his or her own reference materials. Use of reference materials and calculators is explained in the seating letter provided to applicants.
