Dr. Blanton Godfrey
Dr. A. Blanton Godfrey is Dean and Joseph D. Moore Distinguished University Professor, College of Textiles, North Carolina State University. The College is the leading college of its type in the world and produces over half the doctorates in its field in the United States. At NC State Dr. Godfrey is the leader of their new Six Sigma Program, a joint program between the College of Engineering's, Industry Extension Services and the College of Textiles. This program provides Black Belt, Green Belt, and Executive training for many of the leading companies in the United States. It has already attracted participants from leading international companies such as Sony, Ericsson, BOC Edwards, Curtis Wright, and Bespak.
Dr. Godfrey has been involved in Six Sigma Quality work since the very beginning of its origin in Motorola. During this time, he was head of the Quality Theory and Technology Department at AT&T Bell Laboratories and shared with Motorola many of their new methods in reliability and experimental design. In August 1997, Dr. Godfrey became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Juran Institute, Inc., the leading international management consulting, research, and training organization focused on quality management and business excellence, a position he held for thirteen years. Drs. Joseph M. Juran and Frank Gryna of the Institute provided training for the top 700 executives in Motorola during their early days of Six Sigma. Dr. Godfrey was also one of the original judges of the United States Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award when Motorola was presented the award by President Ronald Reagan.
From 1995 to 2000, Dr. Godfrey worked extensively in creating the Juran Institute's offerings in Design for Six Sigma. During his Six Sigma work, he helped develop materials for General Electric and personally provided senior executive training for GE Capital. He personally developed many of the materials for the new Design for Six Sigma training courses and taught both senior executives and Black Belts at Samsung Electronics and Loral Space Systems as well as teaching and consulting for members of a number of other companies.
Blan focused much of his personal research and training while at Juran Institute on quality in research and development. This included helping create and mange the series of Quality Management in Research and Development Conferences and work with leading R&D organizations such a NASA, 3M, Hewlett-Packard, Mobil R&D, Shell Exploration and Production, Philips Electronics, and Bell Labs, Blan joined Bell Labs in 1973 after receiving an MS and PhD in Statistics from Florida State Universtiy and a BS in Physics from Virginia Tech. For nineteen years Blan was also an Adjunct Professor in Columbia University's School of Engineering and Applied Science where he taught graduate courses in quality management and control. He has also been a guest lecturer in clinical quality management at Harvard University.
Blan is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the American Society for Quality, and the World Academy of Productivity Sciences. He is also a member of Sigma Xi, the New York Academy of Sciences, The Fiber Society, and an academician of the International Academy for Quality. He is also listed in Who's Who in America. He has published over 200 articles and book chapters and co-authored three books including Modern Methods for Quality Control and Improvement and Curing Health Care: New Strategies for Quality Improvement. The first edition of Modern Methods was named "Book of the Year" by the Institute of Industrial Engineering and the second edition was published in 2002. He is also the co-editor (with Dr. Joseph M. Juran) of Juran's Quality Handbook, Fifth Edition, published in March 1999. The Spanis edition of the handbook was published last in 2001 and the Japanese edition and paperback edition of Curing Health Care was published this year.
From 1987 to 1990, Blan contributed to the creation of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and server as a judge for the first three years of the award. Blan is on the boards of several companies, nonprofit organizations, and professional societies including the National Institute of Statistical Sciences. In 1992 the American Society for Quality presented Blan the Edwards Medal for his outstanding contributions to the science and practice of quality management. Blan received the Distinguished Graduate of Arts and Sciences in 1993. In 2001 he became the founding editor of Six Sigma Forum Magazine, a new journal published by the American Society for Quality. |
